Vegan Chinese Five Spice Tofu Recipe

This vegan Chinese five spice tofu skillet recipe is not only great for lunch or dinner, it make a tasty breakfast too!

Mini Chef and I are going vegan. We have dedicated ourselves to it for one week to see what the results will be. It will be an adventure for sure!

The intent is to, of course, stick with it. But in all honesty, it’s a grand experiment to see how my blood sugar will handle a vegan diet. As a diabetic, I’ve watched the iThrive documentary, the What The Health documentary, Food Inc., and all those other documentaries that tell you that the cure for everything is a vegan diet, diabetes included.

So we’ll be testing that theory for the next week and sharing recipes here as we go along.

I should note that this is most likely not a great recipe for kids. I made this while Mini Chef was at his dad’s for the weekend. While I totally enjoyed it, I think the intensity of the spices may be a bit much for most kid’s palates.

But ya, I’ll be making this again! Yum!

This makes a great lunch or dinner, but it totally makes a great breakfast too! Note that if you scale the recipe up to make more servings, you'll want to cut back on the Chinese Five Spice a bit so it doesn't become overpowering.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 1/2 cups red cabbage (chopped)
  • 2 large green onions
  • 7 oz. firm tofu (chopped - 1/2 a package/block)
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. Chinese Five Spice (found in the spice aisle)
  • tamari sauce (to taste at serving)
Instructions
  1. Prepare all your veggies and tofu, and have your spices on hand.

  2. In a large skillet, combine all ingredients and cook until the tofu is warmed through. Don't overcook the cabbage.

  3. Transfer to a bowl and top with tamari sauce to your liking.

  4. For an extra kick, you can add a little fresh green onion for garnish as well.
